MLP Season 3 Wrap-Up

After a HUGE finale, it's time to wrap-up Season 3!

We've been to the Crystal Empire, had a visit from Discord, and witnessed the transformation of Princess Twilight Sparkle. Now, it's time to revisit the season and wrap everything up! And what better way to wrap up than with our very special pony friend, James from Unabashedly Obsessed and Blink and You'll Miss It! We talk about our new spinoff of MLP meets The Wire, how Spike is basically Chewbacca, and of course, the best Randopony of the season. Join us for good pony talk and, of course, FUN! FUN! FUN!

MLP S3E13: “Magical Mystery Cure”

Are you ready for PRINCESSES??!?!

People, it’s not a stretch to say that this is the most important episode we’ve covered thus far. It's a musical episode, Twilight is inventing new magic, there's a coronation - a whole lot of stuff gets packed in to what could have been the last-ever episode of this series. Who better to discuss this episode with than Pony-superfan and Apple Bloom to Diana's Applejack, Sarah Kinney! We're breaking down every square hoof of this episode and yes, we may get a little emotional. But IT'S A HUGE FREAKING DEAL PEOPLE.

MLP S3E12: “Games Ponies Play”

Rainbow Dash has some SERIOUS problems with losing the Equestria Games as a filly.

The Crystal Empire has been shortlisted for the Equestria Games, which means Cadence needs some help. Of course, when the Mane Six are involved, nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Rarity's dealing with Cadence's hair emergency while the rest are treating the "Games Inspector" to the time of her life. At least, that's what they think they're doing, until things get very, very weird.

MLP S3E11: “Just for Sidekicks”

All around, a pretty good episode, so long as you forget that Spike's the main character.

You would think that a 13-episode season of a children’s animated show wouldn’t have filler episodes. You’d be wrong. Spike is fun and everything, but this whole episode revolves around the flimsiest premise this or any show has ever produced. Then again, we do get some super silly time with all of the Mane Six's pets, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders get some solid time. And hey - at least it's better than "Spike at Your Service."

MLP S3E10: "Keep Calm and Flutter On"

Discord has returned to bring a little bit of chaos to our lives, and WE LOVE IT.

We know, we know. Discord's an evil being hell-bent on causing chaos throughout Equestria so he can gain power. At least, that's what we've always been told. When it comes down to it, though, he's really a softie just like every other pony. Or rather, pony and/or hoof-clawed-dragon-goat-demon. And as much as we love Discord, Fluttershy is quickly becoming our favorite pony of the Mane Six, hands down. Not to mention Macintosh & Maud just looooove doing those voices...

MLP S3E9: "Spike at Your Service"

If you're ever in the position to save a dragon's life...just don't. It's not worth the hassle.

We love Spike and his adorable dragon face. He's super helpful and a loyal dragon assistant to everypony. But Spike's also a little boring if we have to hear his stories for too long. And this dragon code he has - it's WAY too intense for a baby dragon to be holding over his head. Maybe we just need to let Spike be Spike. Otherwise, the whole city of Ponyville could be in deep, deep trouble.

MLP S3E8: "Apple Family Reunion"

YEE-HAW! We're saddlin' up and ridin' out to the Apple Family Reunion!

Y'all, we don't normally spend half an episode talkin' in a Texas accent, but if the Apples are havin' a dang reunion, then we've just gotta have some good-ole-fashioned fun! We're foldin' up fritters, training for the seven-legged race and keepin' an eye out for that there barn that keeps fallin' over. And we're tryin' not to get too choked up at the beautiful message of love and family that Applejack gets to share with us at the end. Y'all stick around for one of the best episodes of Macintosh & Maud yet!

MLP S3E7: “Wonderbolts Academy”

Rainbow Dash feels the need...the need for speed!

On December 15, 2012, the world finally got a glimpse into an elite school established for the top one percent of Equestria’s Pegasus ponies. Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial equine acrobatics and to insure that the handful of ponies who graduated were the best in the world. They succeeded. Today, the land of Equestria calls it Wonderbolts Academy. The flyers call it: TOP GUN.

OK, not exactly, but Dash and friends remind us of some other hotshot fighter jocks from pop culture. Though Dash isn’t willing to cut corners to get ahead, and that might just mean she has to leave the Wonderbolts behind...

MLP S3E6: "Sleepless in Ponyville"

Macintosh & Maud ain't afraid of no ghosts, but Scootaloo sure is...

Here at Macintosh & Maud, camping is not high on our list of priorities. We enjoy a little nature now and then but we're mostly inside ponies. But we can understand why the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and especially Scootaloo, might think a camping trip would give them time to bond with their Mane Six counterparts. Still, Rainbow Dash is a prankster and likes to tell some really spooky old mare's tales around the campfire, and let's just say Scootaloo is gonna get WAY more than she bargained for...

MLP S3E5: "Magic Duel"

Guess who's back / back again / Trixie's back / tell a friend...

It's time for a good old-fashioned showdown as THE great and powerful Trixie returns to Ponyville, this time with some real magic to fight back with. Twilight's doing the best she can to stop Trixie, but she's still learning magic, and Trixie has figured out some expert-level magic in a short amount of time. Sort of. Meanwhile, Snips and Snails are just the dumbest ponies; Pinkie Pie has the worst case of losing her voice; Rarity is desperate to fend off a magic emergency; and Fluttershy's animal friends get to be part of a good old-fashioned magic show. Now if we could just convince Fluttershy that her animals are going to be OK...

MLP S3E4: "One Bad Apple"

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are extra cute this episode, so why does Babs Seed's thick Brooklyn accent make it so bad?

We're on record here at Macintosh & Maud of not being the greatest fans of the Cutie Mark Crusaders, especially their own dedicated episodes. But this episode isn't the Crusaders' fault - it's the insecure, passive-aggressive bullying of Babs Seed. That and her not-quite-Bronx, not-quite-Jersey accent. Plus, Macintosh & Maud are on to the animators - you have some explaining to do with the song this week. Not your best effort, everybody...

MLP S3E3: “Too Many Pinkie Pies”

Despite Discord's efforts at chaos, we've still got the most Pink-a-riffic episode with our awesome guest, James!

We knew something was up this week. A giant hailstorm while recording? Random sound issues during editing? It could only be Discord. He even left us a quick message to include on the podcast. Nevertheless, and despite the issues, we have the greatest Pinkie Pie episode that ever Pinkie'd with OUR FIRST EVER GUEST, James from Unabashedly Obsessed and Blink and You'll Miss It! We talk all things Pinkie Pie, the desperate need for the Apple family's barn insurance and Pinkie Pie possibly being a time lord. It's fun! Fun! FUN! FUN! FUN!

MLP S3E2: “The Crystal Empire, Part 2”

Just goes to show you: don’t plan a giant party unless you’re ready for EVERYPONY to show up...

So there’s this whole thing where Twilight has to figure out how to save the Crystal Empire from certain doom at he hands of King Sombra. Blah blah blah, something something friendship. What’s FAR more concerning is how the Mane Six, who seem to be AMAZING at entertaining other ponies, didn’t have their ducks in a row for this party. I mean, at least know where the real Crystal Heart is before you make a whole festival about it. Get it together, gang!

MLP S3E1: "The Crystal Empire, Part 1"

Twilight’s on a mission. A mission from...Princess Celestia.

There is no assignment more honored and beloved by Twilight than the homework Princess Celestia gives. And when Celestia says it’s going to be a test - well we all know how Twily is about those. But this isn’t any ordinary test, and the Mane Six are about to discover one of the most isolated, spectacular places in all of Equestria - The Crystal Empire. The question is, are they ready to pony up and save it?

Season 2 Wrap-Up

Time for us to send our own letters to Celestia as we talk about what we’ve learned from Season 2!

We’ve gone through A LOT with our pony friends in Season 2 and now it’s time to share our thoughts. Like how the Cutie Mark Crusaders need less episodes. Or how bits and goofs made this season particularly great. And of course, we have to give our choices for the Best Randopony of the season. Don’t miss it!

S2E26: “A Canterlot Wedding, Part 2”

Twilight KNEW something was wrong with Cadence. Now she’s just gotta get the bride past zombie bridesmares...

Twilight called shenanigans and wound up being right; Princess Cadenza di Amore is still full of joy and love but currently trapped. It’s up to Twilight to get her out and interrupt this demon wedding a la  The Graduate . Except there’s changelings. And zombie bridesmares. Normal wedding stuff.

S2E25: "A Canterlot Wedding, Part 1"

Twilight Sparkle might just be a bit too protective of her BBBFF. Then again, his fiancee seems to be kind of the worst. What to do...

It's time for the pony finale, and for Twilight Sparkle, that means a new sister-in-law. She wants to be happy for Shining Armor, but when you find out your Big Brother Best Friend Forever is getting married via the Equestria equivalent of text message, it's easy to get pissed. Plus, something is waaay off about Cadence. She's the princess of love and joy, right? So why is she such a bummer? It's up to Twily to figure out what shenanigans are going on here...

S2E24: "MMMystery on the Friendship Express"

Doctor Pinkie Pie and Twilight "Watson" Sparkle are on the case this week...

A game is the foot this week as Pinkie Pie suspects foul play after Mr. and Mrs. Cake's majestic masterpiece cake is set about by some sweet tooth. While Pinkie thinks she knows exactly how to catch the cake thief, it turns out finding clues is a difficult task. Fortunately Twilight's on the case. Because if they don't figure out what happened, Mr. Cake might slip into a coma from all the stress-related faints he's suffered.

S2E23: "Ponyville Confidential"

Reporting for the school paper is one thing. Digging up dirt and gossip for the whole town of Ponyville? THAT's a problem.

The Crusaders are still looking for their purpose (and, incidentally, a cutie mark) in all the wrong places. This time, they get deep into the world of gossip journalism. Between their deadline, Diamond Tiara as their editor, and an unwavering commitment to ending their status as blank flanks, there's way too much pressure on these fillies. And when Rarity finds out her secrets have been published, get ready for fireworks.

S2E22: "Hurricane Fluttershy"

Fluttershy may be scared of most things, but she's awesome when it comes to training montages.

We all know Fluttershy is...well...pretty shy. But the constant mocking during flight school was too much to handle. Hence why Fluttershy, a straight up Pegasus with wings, almost never flies. Unfortunately, Rainbow Dash needs ALL hands on deck to make sure they get water from Ponyville to Cloudsdale. Especially with a bad case of pony flu going around. That means it's time for Angel and the other woodland creatures to bust out the weights and training equipment to get Fluttershy ready for action in maybe the BEST montage of the whole series. No joke.
